I've been a card carrying member for about ten years now. I usually donate about $100/year. There are times I scratch my head at some of the causes they take up. But, few other organizations defend the constitution as fairly as they do. They're not a one trick pony like so many other organizations such as the gun lobby, gay rights, etc., etc.......... Those organizations have their place, but the ACLU will represent anyone with a constitutional beef.

Also, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema issued a temporary restraining order to block the removal of any green card holders being detained at Dulles International Airport for seven days. Brinkema’s action also ordered that lawyers have access to those held there because of the president’s ban.

If Trump wasn't Trump, you'd be right. But the Donald is really going to hate His Executive Order being blocked. He's going to be gunning for a federal judge, and he'll be twice as pissed when it is explained that you can't fire a federal judge.

"The New Colossus" By Emma Lazurus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

This is who we are, scared little Trumpkins.

Bob, I'm not sure I'd spend to much money right now. I'd save it just in case California secedes and raises taxes through the roof to take care of the influx of illegals and other people's problems that migrate there. It's all I've heard for days now.. California wants to secede. I can't believe it after hearing the hissy fit California threw when Texas talked about ceceding a while back.

Seriously though, what's going on in California? It's big conversation lately but I don't know anyone personally that lives there to get a straight answer out of. I pay no real attention to the tv news anymore

So what?

I was never in favor of the Muslim ban. I'm fine with Trump losing this one. The question is where are the Democrats going to be when Trump tries to get the good parts of his agenda passed? Like his trade policies, or letting Medicare negotiate drug prices? My guess is they'll be fighting those tooth and nail too, such is their hatred for all things Trump.

If Democrats oppose those things, I would say it's simply because it's a Republican that's pushing them. Which I would also say is foolish in the case of Medicare negotiating drug prices. The trade policies I'm not so sure should be supported because I believe they will drive inflation to unacceptably high levels. That is why I believe Finn is right. Conservatives will likely oppose all but the Muslim ban. Unless, of course they choose to support them purely out of partisanship.

Yep. Long as the troops are loyal, he can tell a federal judge to pound sand.

So much for that oath. You know, the one where he swore to "Preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the united States?" Nine whole days ago?

Does seem like a long time. Always remember, the USA was a democracy once. Until Jan 20, 2017.

But John Adams famously said "There has yet to be a democracy that didn't committ suicide." Funny, it always used to be conservatives that went around quoting that one.

donquixote99
01-29-2017, 10:29 AM
The courts could start finding Trump in contempt over things like this. There's no way they could enforce such orders directly, they couldn't send federal marshals to arrest Trump, but contempt citations would make good grounds for impeachment if Congress ever became so inclined.

Of course, with loyal troops Trump could tell Congress to pound sand too.

Yes, but what Adams had in mind and what those "Conservatives" had in mind were two different things. Adams believed that uneducated, easily led people would elect strong-man tyrants, thus destroying Democracy. He was right.

Modern Conservatives think he was talking about food stamps. Because they are always obsessed with food stamps as the perceived "agent of destruction" that's "ruining America". That and wages that people can actually live on.

“I hope Trump enjoys losing. He’s going to lose so much we’re going to get sick and tired of his losing,” ACLU national political director Faiz Shakir told Yahoo News shortly after the decision was announced.

"Nine hundred thirty-seven.

That was the number of passengers aboard the SS St. Louis, a German ocean liner that set off from Hamburg on May 13, 1939. Almost all of those sailing were Jewish people, desperate to escape the Third Reich. The destination was Havana, more than two weeks away by ship.

So begins a haunting tale, one that would end tragically for hundreds of those on board — so much so that, decades later, it would be the basis for the movie “Voyage of the Damned.”

Before the St. Louis even left Hamburg, there were indications the passengers might have problems disembarking in Cuba. The ship’s owners knew many travelers were likely holding invalidated landing certificates, according to research by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Thousands of miles away, anti-Semitic protests and editorials were cropping up all over Cuba.

“Many Cubans resented the relatively large number of refugees (including 2,500 Jews), whom the government had already admitted into the country, because they appeared to be competitors for scarce jobs,” the museum noted. “Hostility toward immigrants fueled both antisemitism and xenophobia. Both agents of Nazi Germany and indigenous right-wing movements hyped the immigrant issue in their publications and demonstrations, claiming that incoming Jews were Communists.”

Still, the inhospitable circumstances awaiting them paled in comparison to what the passengers wanted to flee in Europe, and so the ship set sail. When the St. Louis arrived in Havana two weeks later, only 29 passengers were allowed into the country. The other 907 were ordered to remain on the ship. (One person had died en route of natural causes.)

As futile negotiations with the Cuban government ensued, the would-be asylum-seekers redirected their pleas to the American government. They would be in vain.

“Sailing so close to Florida that they could see the lights of Miami, some passengers on the St. Louis cabled President Franklin D. Roosevelt asking for refuge,” the Holocaust museum noted. “Roosevelt never responded.”

A State Department telegram stated, simply, that passengers must “await their turns on the waiting list and qualify for and obtain immigration visas before they may be admissible into the United States.”

Finally, the St. Louis returned to Europe. After more than a month at sea, the passengers disembarked in Antwerp, Belgium, where they were divided between four countries that had agreed to take them: Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium and France.

By the end of the Holocaust, 254 of them would be dead.

Nearly eight decades after its doomed voyage, some drew parallels between the U.S. government’s dismissal of the St. Louis and the possible consequences of President Trump’s executive order temporarily banning immigration.

Trump on Friday signed orders not only to suspend admission of all refugees into the United States for 120 days but also to implement “new vetting measures” to screen out “radical Islamic terrorists.” Refugee entry from Syria, however, is suspended indefinitely, and all travel from Syria and six other nations — Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen — are suspended for 90 days. Trump also said he would give priority to Christian refugees over those of other religions.

Earlier that same day, one by one, testimonials from the passengers that had been aboard the St. Louis — and who afterward died at the hands of the Nazis — began appearing on the Twitter account “St. Louis Manifest” (@Stl_Manifest)." WP

"Jihadist groups on Sunday celebrated the Trump administration’s ban on travel from seven Muslim-majority countries, saying the new policy validates their claim that the United States is at war with Islam.
Comments posted to pro-Islamic State social media accounts predicted that President Trump’s executive order would persuade American Muslims to side with the extremists. One posting hailed the U.S. president as “the best caller to Islam,” while others predicted that Trump would soon launch a new war in the Middle East.
“[Islamic State leader Abu Bakr] al-Baghdadi has the right to come out and inform Trump that banning Muslims from entering America is a ‘blessed ban,’” said one posting to a pro-Islamic State channel on Telegram, a social-media platform. The writer compared the executive order to the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, which Islamic militant leaders at the time hailed as a “blessed invasion” that ignited anti-Western fervor across the Islamic world." After top Republican lawmakers harshly criticized President Donald Trump's executive order temporarily barring people from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the US, he fired back on Sunday in an official statement and in more candid words on Twitter.

Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina released a joint statement on Sunday calling the ban "a self-inflicted wound in the fight against terrorism." They were just two of the more prominent lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who have come out against Trump's order, which sparked widespread protests across the nation.

The president called out McCain and Graham specifically in two tweets Sunday evening, accusing the veteran senators of "looking to start World War III."

There has never been a terrorist from anywhere who killed anybody until one day they did.

Fresh here is relative, given the time span of 40 years--1975 thru 2015, and the previous government might not have wanted to upset its base with any type of ban even if the intelligence was available, especially in an election phase.

FOIA Filed As Part of Coordinated Campaign With 50 ACLU Affiliates'

"The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California filed a Freedom of Information Act request today with its local U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office to expose how Trump administration officials are interpreting and executing the president’s Muslim ban, acting in violation of federal courts that ordered a stay on the ban’s implementation. The filing today is part of a coordinated effort from 50 ACLU affiliates, which filed 18 FOIAs with CBP field offices and its headquarters spanning over 55 international airports across the country.
“In spite of court orders to the contrary, some CBP officials appear to be continuing to detain people, though the approach appears to differ by location,” said Linda Lye, Senior Staff Attorney with the ACLU of Northern California. “The public has a right to know the facts on the ground.”
Media reports indicate that CBP officials detained and deported individuals, even after federal courts ordered officials to stop enforcing the executive order following a court challenge from the ACLU and other organizations.
“It is imperative that the public learn if federal immigration officials are blatantly defying nationwide federal court orders that block President Trump’s unconstitutional Muslim ban,” said Mitra Ebadolahi, Border Litigation Project Staff Attorney with the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties. “To shed light on this critical issue of pressing public concern, 50 ACLU affiliates are using the Freedom of Information Act to expose Customs and Border Protection’s abuse of power.”
