Dogs and cats are considered to be livestock in Chinatown.

It's actually sales from pet stores. Here's a link:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/07/07/MN9L1EAT90.DTL

"San Francisco residents who want a pet would have to go to another city, adopt one from a shelter or rescue group, or find one through the classifieds."

It seems to me that the effects of medical marijuana are taking hold.

OTOH, I don't think I'd buy a dog from a friggin' pet store as opposed to a private breeder anyway or even own a pet if I lived in a city. But prohibiting it is just silly.

Not having read the article but having some experience in the "dog fancy" when I was racing whippets, I'm confident that this is designed to stop cats and dogs being locked in little glass cages, full of their own waste, without interaction with their own kind or with humans save at feeding time. It's a sad experience for the animal and often a debilitating one because the deprivation comes at a time in their lives when intense social interaction and stimuli are critical to their development.
