13 people, including 3-year-old boy, shot at South Side park.

When are Lib's going to address the real problems in the intercity?

Maybe we should pass and not enforce a new gun laws

So what are your ideas for addressing the problems in the inner cities?

More AK-7s would do the trick JBS?

NYC seems to be doing a better job than the Second City.

Access to guns is only a part of the equation

Currently, for every 12 aggravated assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, rapes, and murders committed in the United States, approximately one person is sentenced to prison for committing such a crime.

Of 1,662 murders committed in New York City during 2003-2005, more than 90% were committed by people with criminal records

A 2002 U.S. Justice Department study of 272,111 felons released from state prisons in 1994 found that within three years of their release:

• at least 67.5% had been arrested for committing a new offense

• at least 21.6% had been arrested for committing a new violent offense

• these former inmates had been charged with committing at least 2,871 new homicides, 2,444 new rapes, 3,151 other new sexual assaults, 2,362 new kidnappings, 21,245 new robberies, 54,604 new assaults, and 13,854 other new violent crimes

Excellent question. Perhaps he will suggest "gentrification"?

Of course it is a part, but just a part. You can't use just the mass shooting statistics and forget about the rest of them.

A 1993 nationwide survey of 4,977 households found that over the previous five years, at least 0.5% of households had members who had used a gun for defense during a situation in which they thought someone "almost certainly would have been killed" if they "had not used a gun for protection." Applied to the U.S. population, this amounts to 162,000 such incidents per year. This figure excludes all "military service, police work, or work as a security guard."

Based on survey data from a 2000 study published in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology, U.S. civilians use guns to defend themselves and others from crime at least 989,883 times per year.

A 1993 nationwide survey of 4,977 households found that over the previous five years, at least 3.5% of households had members who had used a gun "for self-protection or for the protection of property at home, work, or elsewhere." Applied to the U.S. population, this amounts to 1,029,615 such incidents per year. This figure excludes all "military service, police work, or work as a security guard."

A 1994 survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Americans use guns to frighten away intruders who are breaking into their homes about 498,000 times per year.

...and this, of course, has no part I'm sure:

As of 2002, 15 states automatically restore the firearm rights of convicts upon their release from prison or completion of parole, and 6 other states automatically restore the firearm rights of juvenile convicts upon their release from prison or completion of parole. In 2004, the Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Justice wrote that this system.

Isn't this what comes from identifying gun ownership as a fundamental right?

It seems that only 21 states think so.

" Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said it was a "miracle" no one was killed when someone opened fire with a high-powered rifle at a pick-up basketball game in the Back of the Yards, and he renewed his call for a ban on assault weapons.
"A military-grade weapon on the streets of Chicago is simply unacceptable," McCarthy told a news conference this morning, 12 hours after a 3-year-old boy and 12 other people were shot during at Cornell Square Park."

Yeh, riiight JB. Sounds like you're overjoyed that this happened Chi-town. The problem is that with any gun law is that it needs to be universal. When someone can simply drive to another state and load up on all high powered, mi- spec weaponry they want? No local gun law will be effective in the least.

Well, we have to make all that room for those folks that enjoy using drugs or at least those that supply the folks that enjoy using drugs. You'd think the lesson of prohibition and the town of Chicago would serve as a glowing example. Chicago is what it is today as a result of the alcohol prohibition from way back in 1919....

One of Detriots early problems too. A lot of "rum running" took place across the Detroit river in the 1920s, giving organized crime a solid foothold in that city.
