View Full Version : Blue vs White.

Once again, office vs warehouse/production rears its' ugly head here at work.

Being on both sides over the years I understand both sides frustration.

All the issues, A/C, dirt, work order changes, last minute ships, we know the score :)

One thing I think is really unfair, drug tests if you have an accident. How's an office worker have an accident - paper cut?

Not advocating drug use btw :)

Don't get me started. Ooops! Too late.

As I have stated before; That while I am no big fan of drug abuse.

However,

I believe that drug testing is un-constitutional. If you check out the history of the so-call "drug war" going all the way back to it's roots you will find that this has been argued before and the anti-drug people lost. They had to delegitimize recreational drug use through an intense, (and often downright silly), propaganda campaign, and then find ways to go after the drug trade through TAX CODE.

Besides;

Just because you come up positive on a urinalisys test shortly after having had an accident, does not prove that you were stoned at the time of the incident.
It could have been the night before, a week ago, a month ago, or even longer.
And it is none of your employers business if you smoked a joint at a party while on vacation last summer. Is it illegal? Sure. But, so is speeding. And I don't think it would be right for an employer to fire an employee for getting a speeding ticket, unless he was driving a company vehicle on company time.

See what I'm sayin'?

We agree about something :D

I know a company that does a cheek swab test, much more fair as it only goes back two or three days.

Even that though, someone hits a j 3 days ago, hits another towmotor that causes injury, workers comp is DENIED??! I call BS.

But all us pencil pushers know the production guys are a bunch of stoner slackers who complain about everything :D

I once took a drug test for a software company, when they said I was clean I told them "Well you should have asked me I would have told you that. By the way did they tell you what brand of gin I drink?"

Once a office worker is operating a tow motor, stamp press or any number of machines where several workers work hand in hand or can be directly affected by ones misuse then the drug policy arguement about blue vs white will hold more water. Is it a perfect policy? Nope... but the simple fact that Blue workers are more hands on with serious equipment is enough justification.

I would agree, except I do not see why someone hitting a j a month ago should be punished - and cut off from workers comp - for something that couldn't possibly have had anything to do with it.

So how many people would I have injured while teaching them WAN/LAN software?

Rob, if the pupil was no-computer-skills me you'd probably have injured me over the head. With extreme prejudice :D

As a pro mary jane flunky I have to say drug testing is needed on a lot of jobs. Lives and business could be at stake if some pot head is snoozing instead of doing his job.

That is exactly why it gets sticky.

I was required to take a polygraph as part of a job application once. I wanted the job so I had to but I knew from previous experience that they just don't work. I had no "practical" choice.

I think there are many jobs that insist on drug tests now adays that are nothing more than an invasion of privacy.

Myself I agree with Dave it doesn't belong in the workplace. Where I work you can kill yourself or someone else pretty quickly. Stupid tweaker ass took off 3 of my fingers back in 97 and even though they put them back on theyre never going to work right again.

That being said I would rather work around someone who smoked a j 3 days ago than a guy who was out drinking until 1AM the night before.

Tough call on whats an invasion. At my employment your only tested on reasonable suspicion or if you have an OTJ accident.

Not sure if your aware but medicinal mary jane is legal in several states now.

I am curious as to how an employer will handle a positive test for it when its doctor prescribed

If you've got a prescription you're covered, it don't report as positive.

Like time release morphine :)

A bear walks into a bar and orders a beer. The bartender says, sorry, but we don't serve bears here.

The bear points at a woman sitting at the bar and says, if you don't serve me I'll eat her. The bartender shrugs and says, doesn't matter.

So the bear eats the woman. He points at the bartender and says, serve me NOW!.

The bartender says, trembling, I can't serve you now for sure, we can't serve you if you're on drugs.

The bear, surprised, says I'm not on drugs! The bartender looks him straight in the eye and says:

That was a bar-bitch-you-ate.

:-) I'm here all week.

10-4 on that.

Had an idiot kid drop a 10lb nail gun on my noggin one time. Didn't knock me out, but I was a bloody mess. Earlier in the day, he cut the overhang loose on the edge of the house and it smashed my compressor. I would have thought that any dumb ass would have had sense enough to move the compressor first, but.....

Didn't matter how much pot the little prick smoked, he still couldn't get it right.

And he wasn't around much longer.

It isnt illegal if you get a script, I was on Vicodin years ago and tested positive for it but didnt list it because I had forgot, a simple call to my Dr and all was well............it would be the same for Weed if you got it from a legitimate source. I am all for personal freedom and dont care what anyone does but if you get caught tough shit......they all know damn well it isnt legal so enjoy and pray.

I've had people slip me Vicodin before, last one was a woman I was trying to fix her storm door for (and she didn't hire to put it in in the 1st place) while I could barely walk.

Even my old buddy, who wasn't really a lib, he just hated the Republicans, and BTW had been through two back operations even gave Rush a pass on that one.

According to him, if you've ever been down in the back, you'll do anything to get some relief.

And I've been down in the back. And he's right.

Can't say as I have, Chas, but I've got a pretty impressive "war story" of my own, in and out of hospitals from 1978 to 1984 getting put back together. I know about pain and pain sucks. Also, being a reformed drink, I try not to judge other people's addictions.

Anyway, I was really only needling "New Kid" about how he and Limbaugh have a lot in common.

Watching Washington Week last night they were saying that the Democrats chances in November depended a lot on the unemployment number. Sure, considering that most Mahogany Row types are Republicans and that they are not hiring, just bringing in more temps, what do you think are the chances of unemployment dropping below 10%? I would say about those of a snowball in hell. How effing hypocritical can they get.

Chas that is just to make up for the fact that I never was a linebacker - 5'-8" and 145 pounds wringing wet. As a result of a breech birth I have never had full use of my left arm, so I guess the good health and grey matter was to compensate. Then too, I suffered for 53 years under that socialist single payer plan health care, well not really as it was only the last 34 years that it has been in effect.:D

Much of it comes from a good wife who looks after my diet.

So you're a runt too.

I'm also 5'8" and I wish I were back at 145, I really need to work on that. And I wasn't a linebacker either...they made me play offensive guard. Couldn't really blow anyone out of the hole, but I was wicked when it came to taking their pins out. At least they didn't force me to play basketball.

I also have a good wife, unfortunately, she prefers to work the 2nd shift, and both of our diets suffer accordingly.

If not for sinus infections, I'd never go to the doctor. I only wish my wife were as durable as myself.

Having a good wife is as a fine way for us combatants to find common ground (& Ry Cooder too). My wife works the third shift, taking care of her angels as she calls them - even if they are crochety old farts sometimes - kinda like her husband. The other morning I fixed her chicken fried steak, gravy and mashed taters for my breakfast and her supper. Course, we'll sometimes have scrambled eggs at night. Unfortunately, both of us are pretty good cooks, and I enjoy the product of our labors. (Had to buy two new suits for the trial.)

I should note that I am now 5'-7" due to shrinkage that they tell comes with the years, guess I was not sanforized.:D Only ever played pickup football, was great fun when the girls asked to play against us.

We get catalogs from everybody and his brother, got one a while back from an outfit that does really nice MREs. Now power failures are quite frequent here so we ordered a few. You just put the pouches in boiling water for a number of minutes. They were surprisingly good, and beats fried food - I get that maybe two or three times a year. I'll ask Florence if she still has that catalog.

Best of luck to both of you, take care.

When you get right down to it, we're all pretty much the same. There are a lot more honest and decent folks than we sometimes suspect. And anyone who eats chicken fried steak for breakfast must be some sort of blood brother to me.

Say, if you win big, you gonna get a couple of pair of them tasseled loafers to go with them new suits?

Anyway, I gotta go. My poor wife was forced to pull a double and I told her I would cook supper for her. It won't be the most inspired gruel I've ever burned, but it's what she requested.
