The 90 years old woman who has been arrested in Ferguson was Hedy Epstein, neé Wachenheimer. She was born in Freiburg, and lived in Kippenheim, a little town which is just 18 miles away from my hometown, until she had been sent to England in 1939, together with other children.
Kippenheim had a prospering jewish community at the beginning of the last century and this community had a nice synagogue. The interiour had been destroyed in 1938 but the building survived and had been used as a warehouse for decades. Some 20 years ago an organization had been founded in order to change the warehouse into a memorial. My late father was a member of this organization and he and others spent a lot of money so that this memorial came true pretty soon.
In the last years Hedy Epstein vistited her old hometown several times again and she gave a lot of talks and lectures about the history of the jewish community of Kippenheim, she gave them also in the former synagogue, and she is happy that it is a memorial now. Her sentiment was always a sentiment of reconciliation.
She was in email contact with Kippenheim in the last days and she told the chairman of the "Ehemalige Synagoge Kippenheim", Jürgen Sude, that she has to appear in court in October, 21st.
