No, I don't have HBO but I'm looking forward to watching it on HBO NOW in a week or two.

There's also sort of a Roman à clef called "The Master" with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix. I've got it in my Netflix queue and will probably watch it this week.

You got it. Snake oil and all. Tom Cruise came off as a f**kin' raving, paranoid egomaniac.

I've always known this so called self help organization was a little weird but ...WOW! They beat down the IRS?

No offense to any Scientologists but seek psychiatric help if you've bought into this thing.

If infested, what else is there for a human to do?

As far as L. Ron goes, his space opera novel Battlefield Earth was a fun read.

A hustle specifically designed to fleece the wealthy, masquerading as a religion. How did that happen again?

Well L. Ron was a half-assed sci-fi novelist so he had to make a living somehow

He wrote pulp and knew it.

Not the best pulp either, by a long shot.

Between the fiction and the religion, a legacy of artistic drek, and evil exploitation.

What's with all the pseudo naval uniforms, the saluting and calling himself "commodore"?

Here's a link to a HuffPo interview with three experts on Scientology.

One of them, a guy named John Sweeney, did a documentary in 2007 for the excellent BBC documnentary series "Panorama" (which you used to be able to watch on The Discovery Channel before they went "all redneck all the time"). Here's a link th that one.

True. Every short story and novel I've seen by Hubbard was a joke.

OK, who rated this thread as "nuts" and how was it done?

Do we have a closeted L.Ron fanboi in our midst?

Did not. Knowing that the likes of Tom Cruise and others in his circle are involved is enough to keep me away. It's my anti-social side.;)

So much of the Tea Party's paranoid anti IRS rhetoric seems to be a page stolen from Scientology's playbook from the '90s.

Holy crap, 2012 tax records show the 'church' has $1.5 billion on the books? Wow...

They have a whole lot more than that...... a whole lot.

(At one point, before the IRS agreed to giving them the status of a religion, they owed about that much in taxes.)

Yes, it is.

I watched "Going Clear" yesterday. It covered pretty much the same ground as the earlier BBC documentaries I linked to earlier but it was interesting to see some of Miscavige's goons from the BBC shows as sources in the HBO documentary.
