Yep, since at least 1964 when they took the silver out of the money...OK, they kept a LITTLE in the half dollars til 1970, but who uses them anyway?

Grumpy 05-21-2009 03:36 PM

I still used half dollars. Course their only worth a quarter now.

merrylander 05-21-2009 03:46 PM

I think the Eisenhower dollar was the last silver one, had a few don't know what happened to them.

Sandy G 05-21-2009 05:05 PM

No, the general circulation Ike dollars were "clad" like everything else. The Mint sold 40% uncirculated & proof dollars all thruout the series, 1971-78, for collectors. Like all "silver" dollars, "Ikes" were never very popular, mainly because of their size, & the fact few coin-operated machines would take them. The last 90% silver-content dollar coins in circulation were the "Peace" series of 1921-28,& 1934-35. The mint has made & sold a TON of "Silver Dollars" in the last 15-20 years, but they are all "bullion" coins, basically for collectors & never intended for general circulation. They are .999 fine silver, & really would not hold up under circulation, anyway.
