Fracking and Earthquakes

So any connections between recent earthquakes like in Colorado or the East Coast and Hydraulic fracturing for natural gas? I believe they also think it caused a cluster of quakes in Arkansas IIRC.

Some might of seen the segment on Sixty Minutes or the documentary Gasland or have read about it. Pretty scary stuff, France has already banned Fracking due to the effects on ground water.

I heard a well known geologist speaking on this very issue last week. He said that there no fracking going on anywhere near the Mineral, VA earthquake location. OTOH, he readily admitted that the reinjection of waste water into the ground at high pressure after fracking has caused some limited seismic activity.

Once they stopped fracking in Arkansas, the earthquakes diminished.

Then again, the 4.3 trembler may have been the cause of diminished earthquakes in the area.

Who knows?

From what I gather, there was absolutely no link between fracking and the VA incident. OTOH, fracking seems to responsible for minor quakes in other locations. However, minor quakes are often measurable on seismographs, but all but indiscernible to those who live nearby.

For example, we had a 3.6 earthquake last year just a mile or so from where I work and a little over 5 miles from my house and I felt nothing. FWIW, there are tens of thousands of minor quakes worldwide every year.

WRT to fracking, I think issues of groundwater quality are far more prominent.

Energy Department is scrutinizing hydraulic fracturing for natural Gas. Ground water is a very big part of the investigation. Just hope it not like letting the fox watch the hen house.

The Texas Water Development Board estimates the total amount of water used for fracking statewide in 2010 was 13.5 billion gallons. This is when they are in a drought right now.

This is what I was listing to when the thread was started todayhttp://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/20...-over-fracking
