B&W L-808 estate sale

Hey there's a sale on the NW side of Chicago...closes today and I believe a pair these monsters are still on the floor.

What would be the most I want to pay for these? The photos on the sale website look like they're in perfect shap.

Thanks.

Beautiful!

There is an old thread on AK about, I believe, those very speakers.

There is one ad on USAudiomart. The asking price is........$4,400. Which I think is ridiculous.

Unless you have some special lust for those speakers, they are worth whatever very good big good-looking speakers are worth to you, as a functional/decor item. I think they are too scarce for a 'market price' to actually even exist. B&Ws have a great reputation, though, so you can get into four figures for these with some confidence of resaleability.

Like I say, it's sort of a matter of thinking on how much you'd like speakers of this sort. And keep in mind there are other highly regarded big vintage speakers in the world. There are some AR-9s on the Bay now for about $1200. To bracket on the high side, some Infinity RS-1B twin towers sold recently for a bit over $3600, shipped....

I have a pair of DM-7's in my pile o' speakers and I'm pretty familiar with most of the line that followed with the "bullet" tweeters on top. But I was not aware of these. I did a little research, they apparently weight almost 350 pound each, and sold for $7500/pair back in 1985.

But what the heck are they worth today? What somebody will pay for them I guess. I'm gonna go take a look.

Not a penny more!

Go get 'em!

Well, any word on what these bad boys went for?

Ike Bana 03-28-2015 12:27 PM

We didn't get into town until this morning. They had extended the sale until noon today. I called the sale location and was actually able to get through to one of the team there. They said they were gone. I asked if they could tell me what they went for and I got a brusque, "I have no idea." So that's it.

Half of what they show up on CL for next week, perchance?

Thanks for the report.

We're not neurotic estate salers but we look at the listings from estatesales.net almost every week and if something looks interesting we'll try to make time to get to it. My experience is that these days estate sale items are always more money than stuff at GW and other resale/thrift shops or salvage houses. So I'm figuring it was more money than I was going to be willing to spend anyway.

It's about 5 years now since Ike's great LaPorte County IN estate sale haul...

-Pair of Ohm Walsh 4 speakers...very clean.
-Two Carver M500 Amplifiers
-Revox B791 Turntable

All for the ridiculous total of $320.

And then a couple of years ago, a pair of Infinity Compositon Prelude PFR's from Salvage One in Chicago for 100 bucks.

I doubt I'll see anything like either of those ever again.
