I have another Nonesuch album of Bulgarian choral "folkish" music that I like better. It's "Music of Bulgaria" by the Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra of the Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic. (Man, these Bulgarians love long fancy names for their performing groups.) Same conductor, Philippe Koutev, but the music is much rawer and has a more "authentic" feel. Bulgarian music is really pretty unique. The people are nearly all ethnic Slavs but the country was overrun and controlled by the Tatars from Central Asia for a long time. Unlike Russia, which "threw off the Tatar Yoke", the Bulgarians just absorbed them so they end up being Slavs with many nuances of Tatar culture. Their music is an example of that melange. John |
Tchaikovsky---1812 Overture Deutsche Grammophon CD
I think of him, everytime this piece is played at the 4th of July fireworks. And, I can't help but wonder how many people in the crowd realize this music was written by a Russian homosexual and how so many of them would react if they knew. Dave |
