Blows is definitely one of my favorites. Protest music at its finest. I was going to wonder out loud whether anyone did concept albums any more, but I realized that artists barely put out albums any more. It seems like most music is geared toward downloads of one song at a time. Dang. I'm getting old and crochety when it comes to music.

Speaking of protest music, I had to spin Steve Miller Band Number 5.
Industrial Military Complex Hex

Lord, I'm so tired of payin' all of these dues
From Sunday to Sunday all I hear is bad news
Tired of the war and those industrial fools
I've got to make it better cause I've got nothin' lose
Won't somebody help me cause I've gotten in my shoes
Those industrial military complex blues
It also includes "Never Kill Another Man" and "Jackson Kent Blues."

Regards,

D-Ray

You hear a lot about Kent State but I can't remember the last time I heard anyone mention Jackson State.

Listening to "Cahoots" by The Band.

It was considerably more egregious - if one can speak in degrees of opening fire on innocent students. A year or so ago, NPR did a good series commemorating both events.

A bit, I suppose. This album is a little too homogenized and over-produced.

I have another Nonesuch album of Bulgarian choral "folkish" music that I like better. It's "Music of Bulgaria" by the Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra of the Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic. (Man, these Bulgarians love long fancy names for their performing groups.) Same conductor, Philippe Koutev, but the music is much rawer and has a more "authentic" feel.

Bulgarian music is really pretty unique. The people are nearly all ethnic Slavs but the country was overrun and controlled by the Tatars from Central Asia for a long time. Unlike Russia, which "threw off the Tatar Yoke", the Bulgarians just absorbed them so they end up being Slavs with many nuances of Tatar culture. Their music is an example of that melange.

Tchaikovsky---1812 Overture Deutsche Grammophon CD

I think of him, everytime this piece is played at the 4th of July fireworks. And, I can't help but wonder how many people in the crowd realize this music was written by a Russian homosexual and how so many of them would react if they knew.

Well, I think he's sort of a jerk but he sure has some chops. Plus, his Lincoln Center gig earns him an immense salary so there's probably a lot of jealousy motivating that criticism.

Actually, I like Branford better, always have. Delfeayo plays a very good 'bone and Jason ain't bad on the drums. Hell of a family!
