World Government?

How many of us believe that the formation of a "World Government" is underway? That the formation and continued strengthening of the EU, the expansion of Global Trade, Open Borders policies and so on are all designed to erode the effectiveness of sovreign nations and their governments?

Deliberate steps on the path to world government?

If so, do you believe this to be a good thing, or a bad thing?

I offer no opinion at this point, I'm just trying to elicit your opinions.

Dave

(I thoght about putting this in "Conspiracy Theories" But figured "Global Politics" was more appropo.)

Never happen.

National sovereignty and nationalism are in our DNA. We're primates and, as such, we are hard wired for organization into tribes (human) or troupes (simians). We'll never be able to shake off our need to distinguish between "us" and "them".

Hell, we can't even manage to do that within the nations and societies we've created for ourselves. Look at the political mess that's the focus of this board. We're even to the point where we literally hate each other on the basis of party affiliation, to say nothing of race or religion.

It will happen, but only if/when we discover we are "not alone" in the universe. :)

A new "them" for us to unite against.

With apologies to Solomon Burke:

Everybody needs somebody
Everybody needs somebody to hate

My take, (you asked! lol) is that the upper classes across the globe are working hand in hand to a degree not seen before.

Not exactly world government, but perhaps more sinister, backroom deals involving billions of people and trillions of dollars.

I seriously doubt it's a good thing.

I tend to think its more likely that multinational corporations will render national governments obsolete. Any future wars are more likely to be for resources and profits.

As dysfunctional as our government is, the "face" of world government is the U.N. and it is way more dysfunctional than we are. Nobody wants to go down that road.

As Zeke points out, it may happen if the world has to unite against a common enemy (from outer space), but short of that the sovereign nations of the world aren't anywhere close to doing this.

Hell, our best friends in the world barely like us. The New World Order (along with the resulting Pax Americana) that many predicted would evolve from us "winning" the cold war hasn't exactly worked out as planned.

Fixed it for you.

The Pax Americana has actually been in place since the end of WW2 and has been a boon to mankind in many ways.

The second half of the 20th century, at least for the free world, was a golden age in many ways and will probably be looked at with envy as we move forward.

Other than for those killed in the many proxy wars between the US and the Soviets or Chinese or by repressive puppet governments propped up by the big actors.
