'Escape To The Dismal Swamp' on The Smithsonian Channel

An archeological story about the Maroons in the 'Great Dismal Swamp' by the Smithsonian Institution. An hour well spent.

Meh.

Maroon is an old sea fairing term. Marooned on a desert island.

And it's an old term applied to mixed-race escaped slave communities. In Great Dismal Swamp and in lots of cases across Caribbean and Central and South America. I will guess the the seafaring use stems from this, as the castaway was stuck in an isolated place, like these communities were.
