Membership totals?

Being an unrepentant stat geek, I look at the membership numbers on the bottom of the page. Even though I see new members joining almost daily, the number of active members seem to go down, as well as the total number of members. What criteria are used to determine membership and active membership? I think I have figured out that senior membership merely means 100 or more posts.

A lot of those new members are spammers and I have been cleaning them out. Hence the numbers going down.

The upside is those that we have seem to be pretty active.
