Obama visiting La Jolla on Monday

Obama is visiting La Jolla on Monday. He's having a small fund raiser, 100 guests or so, at a private home. The advance team was there today along with catering. I guarantee there will not be any poor people there unless the campaign brings them. I'll be working about a quarter mile from the fund raiser. I hope I don't get held up by road blocks like I did when Clinton came motoring by a few years back.

Lucky you. Nope, not too many poor folk in La Jolla. I remember paying almost $10 for a hamburger and fries there back in '86.

He actually waived as he drove past. The house I was at was right in front of where he made his final turn onto the cordoned off street. I debated on hanging around, but then decided that a President, any president, doesn't come by very often. His car was only about 20 feet away. He appeared somewhat younger than on TV. Personally, if I were President, I'd like to put on a helmet and ride around in anonymity on a motorcycle just to stay somewhat sane.

In 1972, Nixon "visited" my hometown (Newton Falls, Ohio) in the same fashion.....His motorcade blew past us at about 50 mph as he waived from behind the bullet-proof glass.

The next day my mother, being a staunch Republican, took my brother and I to Youngstown to hear him lie about how he gave a shit about manufacturing jobs, (Much like Republicans still do today.). Anyhow, this time he actually walked up to the barricades and shook hands, mine being one of them. Scumbag or not, meeting the POTUS is something you don't forget. Especially not when you're an eight year old kid.

Side note; When we got home, mom proudly told my father, a union guy and an FDR Democrat, "Davey shook hands with the president.".

He asked;
"You shook hands with Nixon?"
"Yessir."
"Go wash it."
