“Lügenpresse”

Quote:

BERLIN — When a video of two Donald Trump supporters shouting “Lügenpresse” (lying press) started to circulate Sunday, viewers from Germany soon noted its explosive nature. The defamatory word was most frequently used in Nazi Germany. Today, it is a common slogan among those branded as representing the “ugly Germany”: members of xenophobic, right-wing groups.

More hysteria.

The term predates the Nazi.

It really means "lying press".

What should be substantive: Is the press lying? Is the press in collusion?
Is the press suppressing news? Is the press hyping? etc.

The press is perhaps concerned with finding paying customers. Some are true reformer/ crusaders.
Trump is low hanging fruit as both a subject and deserving target of scorn.

So, it's okay to use it then? The term is bereft of meaning beyond the literal?

You're in denial.... Americans shouting a German word? Where do you think they got it? From pre-Nazi German commentary? Please.
