John Wayne - Draft Dodger

Not at all uncommon among the jingoistic hard-right. Donny’s in “good” company.

Loved the bit about real troops booing him for his movies glorifying war.

Hypocrite and a good Republican....

Nothing new here to see.

I like looking at WIKI and seeing what actors did serve on WWII.

As an example....

Wayne Morris...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Morris

""While filming Flight Angels (1940), Morris became interested in flying and became a pilot. With war in the wind, he joined the Naval Reserve and became a Navy flier in 1942, leaving his film career behind for the duration of the war.

Morris was considered by the Navy as physically 'too big' to fly fighters. After being turned down several times as a fighter pilot, he went to his uncle-in-law, Cdr. David McCampbell, imploring him for the chance to fly fighters. Cdr. McCampbell said "Give me a letter." He flew the F6F Hellcat off the aircraft carrier USS Essex with the VF-15 (Fighter Squadron 15), the famed "McCampbell Heroes."

A December 15, 1944, Associated Press news story reported that Morris was "credited with 57 aerial sorties, shooting down seven Japanese Zeros, sinking an escort vessel and a flak gunboat and helping sink a submarine and damage a heavy cruiser and a mine layer."[4] He was awarded four Distinguished Flying Crosses and two Air Medals. While it's clear that Wayne was a racist asshole, I would agree with the assessment that he was of more value to the war effort making what were essentially propaganda movies than he would have been in uniform.

Still an asshole though.

I don't see his work during the war as more helpful then other who served yet made films also.

The role call of actors who served in uniform with honor is long and proud.

I never met the guy. So have little in a way of knowing what was in his heart.

I recall my Father, a WW2 Veteran shouting at me to "Shut that off!" when he caught me watching "The Green Berets". I said "it's a John Wayne movie. Good stuff."..........". "No, it's propaganda and John Wayne is a coward, full of nothing but hullabaloo. Now, shut it off!".

He couldn't stand Reagan, either; "....just a slick talking has been actor hired to talk you out of everything we've worked and fought for. My generation had life hard when we were young and it got better. You kids are going to have it the other way around if Reagan and his people have their way.".

Have you seen the clip where he explains how he's not a racist because he; "......always hired negroes if I need someone to play the part of a slave, a criminal or a prostitute.".

Almost as interesting as listening to Rand Paul explaining how it's not racist to refuse a customer service because of their race, it's simply an example of a business owners Constitutional right to disallow anybody he chooses to step foot on his property.......
