I understand it's much tamer these days. I went through it in 1983.
I had scars on my hands and knees from the non-skid for years afterwards.
Brutal, just brutal.
I am also a member of the Order of Magellan.
But the "ceremony" that goes with that was far less brutal.
Pretty much just a certificate and a handshake.
