The difference between Hillary and Trump is that Hillary is the hand picked by the elites candidate, while Trump is the insurgent outsider.
I think the fact that the Republicans had so many candidates in the beginning to split the establishment vote up, that it gave him an opening.
Hillary on the other hand had the path cleared for her.
I believe that if Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden had been in, Hillary would have gone the way of Jeb and Warren would be the front runner. Why those two chose to stay out, I don't know, but it could very well be that they were pressured to do so.
