For the most part, it started in the mid '70's in Virginia with Falwell and Robertson. Yes, Virginia, the land of Jefferson, Madison and Monroe.
The Religious Right coalesced around Reagan because he (not a religious man) was willing to give them a seat at the table with regard to policy-making in the GOP (with respect to cultural issues) in exchange for their support and grass-roots political efforts.
