People who take action like that typically report afterwards (if nothing horrible happens as in this case) that their reactions were instant, they never considered not intervening. So we are talking instant, subconscious decision-making here. It is hard to know how one will react if you've never been in such a situation. But one likes to think that examples like this will inspire others to courageous action.
