As for Robert Byrd, the only thing that really distinguishes him from other well-known Dixiecrats (e.g., Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms) was that he didn't switch to the GOP when it embraced institutional racism. In other words, he reformed himself whereas the Dixiecrats who became Republicans didn't. In 2005 he said,
"I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times ... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened."
