I'm trying to see the big deal here. IIRC the internet was originally designed in the cold war era for a US military communications vehicle that was more secure than radio and telephone. When it became a public vehicle we decided to create the ICANN to take care of domain naming and addressing. The military really has no hand in running it anymore. The internet has grown to a global communications vehicle. It has also grown so big that the US doesn't want the sole responsibility for babysitting it. I can understand that. I think the problem here is the extreme right feels that if it is put under global control, that will lead to global rule making, and other countries might be able to censor it, or stop the US constitutional rights to free speech on it. Personally, I think it is too big for that. OTOH, it could just be the CEO of ICANN is Fadi Chehadé, and he was born in Beirut, Lebanon. Maybe he is secretly behind all this and wants to get the internet under the control of terrorists. Yeah, that's it.
