Soc Sec works the same way, like pay periods at work too. You get paid for a period at the end of the period.

There is always a waiting period. The idea is to incentivize a person to get back to work quickly, not encourage them to go on welfare.

Most states also have a longer waiting period if the applicant has voluntarily quit or been fired for cause.
