Insurance

I was reading a story about a tornado that moved through the area yesterday and came across a quote from a women who had he roof destroyed by a flying tree, "I have trees down all over my backyard. The pool is ruined. I have insurance, but who knows what will be covered.”

It just dawned on me that this is true of all insurance not just home owners. We really don't know what is and what is not covered, how it is covered (replacement or value) or what the limits may and may not be.

Then it dawned on me that insurance companies are in the business of paying out the least they can and become your enemy when you do need them.

Some business.

"We protect you against calamity but when calamity strikes you need a lawyer to deal with us."

Just my though of the day.

You could read through the policy to see what is covered. (Good luck with that!)

You could hire a lawyer to read through the policy and have him/her tell you what is covered. (Now you have to pay the lawyer too, and if you hire three lawyers you will get three different opinions.)

Seems our only choice is to get the jar of Vaseline and go pay the agent.

Once you see how an insurance company will handle a house fire. You will learn quickly the need to know your rights.

All insurance companys will be your best friend until it comes time to pay out a claim.

My auto insurance company (Esurance) was gobbled up by Allstate. Guess what? They almost doubled my rate, to which I politely told 'em to get my policy out, roll it up into a tube and shove it where the sun don't shine.

Have you looked into USAA? Best and usually cheapest insurance there is, bar none.

They are way over the top in price Dave. 21st Century has the best rates for us.
Geico used to be a good company, we chucked them for eSurance until Allstate.

I've never had a problem collecting from an insurance company. I think the key is to have everything well documented and know what is or is not covered by your policy. Today, there are so many people that file questionable claims that I can't really blame the insurance companies for being careful.

Hmm no problems with Allstate here, our agent looked at our homeowner's policy and suggested Bob you don't really need this and knocked $306 of the premium. Cars are handled well also.

What you really need to do is take your digital camera and photograph everything in the house, burn it to DVD and put that in the safe deposit box.

And consider the value of your stereo and records! After discussion with the ins guy I added a rider, only a couple bucks a month. 'ItsDeductable' on Turbotax puts a low value on LPs at $4/ea, for tax writeoffs if you give them to goodwill!
