I consider it a personal challenge to get a smile, or better yet, a chuckle out of those in public contact positions. Sometimes, it has the side effect of better service, but that's not really the point. My wife takes it over the top, though. She loves to tell the people "you're so sweet" or "bless your heart" or some other reflection of her growing up in a small town. Now if she were to say "Isn't that special" I might have to put my foot down.

Up north we used to say "Well, aren't you special?", I'm thinking it had the meaning as the southern version, which isn't a compliment at all.
