Which has damn all to do with your original assertion that it was "(losing) a war that wiped out a huge chunk of our male population". Instead, it's a response to overpopulation and the strain it places on infrastructure and resources. In turn, that overpopulation was the result of the huge spike in birthrates following WWII.
