Mass transit is a much more democratic use of resources that building more and more super-highways - and it preserves fuel and lessens emissions. All of that could create more downward pressure on fuel prices and make the effect of the increased fuel taxes less painful.

So the jobs that might come from an expanding economy fueled by cheaper more abundant energy isn't helpful for those "not at the top of the domestic food chain? Making energy more expensive domestically while energy prices are falling internationally discourages domestic growth and helps buoy OPEC's artificial oil price targets, no?

"In Oklahoma, drivers are paying way less than that, a welcoming sight for many, but also tough for others in a state run by oil.

You can’t miss the bright and bold numbers that read $1.59."

Wow. I paid $2.55 today to fill up my gas guzzler which I am now using sparingly. I find it hard to believe that the Saudi's are driving the prices down intentionally to do a Hunt Bros. It is certainly hurting Iran their arch enemy, probably Iraq too.

I don't want a genie with my hearing impairment, but it does make what I hear funnier than what people say. F.I. , it recently converted "I left some stuff at Hal's" to "I'd like some stuffed owls". True story.

Neat! Never saw such a display.

ON EDIT: It's a defensive display. Trying to get big to scare enemies.

I also read about the fascinating behavior of mobbing. This is a harassment attack made against owls by a bunch of other birds who'd rather not be eaten by one. Mobs, once they get going, are joined by various species--whoever's around. They surround and mess with the owl, but don't actually injure it. Nor does the owl fight back. He just leaves if he's had enough.

The non-violent nature of this anti-owl protest, and the reaction to it, are exemplary.

I've seen this type of display with the bigger hawk species around here.

Yes, all raptors, except possibly new world vultures, do it. It's called "mantling" and is intended to protect prey/food that they've just taken.

I think I've seen behavior similar to that here.

Mobbing

A few years ago there was a guy in the neighborhood who was making a little extra money by letting homeless people camp in his yard, selling drugs and raising ringneck doves for game ranches. When he inevitably got busted and then evicted he released his doves into the neighborhood.

The local hawks must have thought they'd died and gone to heaven and set about trying to chow down on the naive newly liberated doves. Well, the doves had other ideas. They turned out not to be such easy pickings and, any time a hawk cruised their nest sited, the doves would mob them furiously and raucously and drive them off. They were frequently joined by the mocking birds and jays in the neighborhood.

We still have plenty of ringnecks here, not so many hawks.

John
