Journalistic ethics

I remember some thread in which we discussed whether being objective in the media included neutral reporting of the sewage oozing from the right wing media. It turns out that E.J. Dionne Jr. expressed his thoughts on this in today's Washington Post. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...T2010072502959

To expand on his column a bit: I see the role of journalists as providing the public the most accurate reporting of events, including politics, as possible. It does not enhance the accuracy of the reporting if the media repeats allegations which are not supported by the evidence, or are even contrary to the evidence. I'm tired of hearing what Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck are saying. Keep their half-truths and innuendo out of the public discourse.

Regards,

D-Ray

When has the press ever been neutral?

Dionne's point is not one of neutrality. It's one of truthfulness. Like him or not, Dan Rather of the "mainstream media" was forced out due to reporting based upon false documents.

Fox News and Talk Radio should apply the same standard. If they don't, they should be ignored or "refudiated."

I will admit, Fox isn't a news channel, it's a talking head channel.

As usual, Dionne is right on target.

The whole Idea of Fox and Limbaugh and their offensive programming reminds me of a teaching tool my wife used with the boys. Whenever they were upset about teasing or something that someone said, she told them that they had PTI - the power to ignore. I don't know of anything worthwhile that those slime mongers can to add to my life. Therefore, why should I be interested in listening to them, in quoting them, in reading about them or otherwise expanding their forum? (I like the skits Jon Stewart has done about the effect on the staffers whose assignment is to monitor the talking heads.)

As Dave has pointed out from time to time, there are some people whose arguments most likely came directly from the latest Rush broadcast. To the extent we would be remotely interested in what he said, we can pretty well figure it out from the latest rant we hear from a wingnut. (Note that I did not say conservative. There are plenty of conservatives who are quite capable of thinking for them selves - as this board shows.)

Regards,

D-Ray

Amazing, isn't it? And when you suggest to these individuals that they might be "brainwashed".....................

In their eyes, you're the one who is brainwashed by the MSM for not agreeing with the Majarushi. Don't ask me how I know (mother-in-law).

He wins them over with his kind and gentle nature and his fun-loving humor.
