This is just a temporary stay by the Circuit Justice (as Kagan is for 9th and Thomas for 11th) to permit the Court as a whole to consider the issue. This is deliberate such that a final decision will not seem like partisan whimsy by the responsible Circuit Justice. IOW, no biggie and totally expected. Moreover, the Appeals Court that Congress could get the tax returns subject to an order to keep them confidential, so they wouldn't have come out before the election anyway.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday denied a request by Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to block a subpoena demanding his testimony before a Georgia grand jury investigating possible criminal interference in that state's 2020 presidential election.

The court in its ruling said a federal judge's earlier order upholding the subpoena adequately protected Graham from being questioned about legislative activity during his testimony, as provided for by the Constitution's Speech or Debate Clause.

There were no noted dissents by any of the Supreme Court's justices to the order. CNBC

We May Have Found the SCOTUS Leaker ...

... and it appears that it may have been (conservative) Justice Samuel Alito.

As the Supreme Court investigates the extraordinary leak this spring of a draft opinion of the decision overturning Roe v. Wade, a former anti-abortion leader has come forward claiming that another breach occurred in a 2014 landmark case involving contraception and religious rights.

In a letter to Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and in interviews with The New York Times, the Rev. Rob Schenck said he was told the outcome of the 2014 case weeks before it was announced. He used that information to prepare a public relations push, records show, and he said that at the last minute he tipped off the president of Hobby Lobby, the craft store chain owned by Christian evangelicals that was the winning party in the case.

Keith Olbermann @KeithOlbermann

The Supreme Court Leaker - for Dobbs and Hobby Lobby - was Samuel Alito.

Alito is a disgrace to this nation and as dangerous as any terrorist.

He must be forced off the Court.

Finally after Roberts did his best to stall,

Supreme Court allows release of Trump's tax returns to House Democrats

I very much doubt if anything will be released to the Ways & Means committee, so this is just a hollow victory (in principle).

Treasury has them, they might release them to the lame duck Democrats. If it goes until new congress, they will wave them off.

^^You are correct, news from NPR is that the Ways and Means committee will get this immediately.
I did not know that Treasury can release the info, thought Trump himself had to provide the documents.
