It was said, by the WaPo, to have been shot down at 60-65 thousand feet, by a Sidewinder. Cheapest air-to-air missile we've got. But I suppose it would have been cheaper to have the fighter close and try to down it with 20mm cannon fire.
NY Times says the gondola was 'roughly the size of three busses.' That sounds pretty big. Wonder if we're sure it wasn't manned?
