Merkel gives tacit support to coal.

Merkel is quietly resisting giving up coal. Surprise, surprise.

This was just a few weeks before in Berlin.. http://www.ce-conference.org/ 2

Heard on the radio yesterday an suggestion to the effect, we now have the ability to halt or even reverse the rise in temperatures. Engineer the climate so we can stop being worried now, man can fix it!

Now that is scary!

Merkel is weakened by the result of the last election. Now she is forced in a position where she has to compromise on coal and immigration (she resisted a cap ) to form a coalition.

Does it come down to making a choice between domestic nuke power, Russian natural gas, or domestic coal?

Nuke is definitely out since Fukushima. However she would like to prolong coal. Coal aids the economy of the less prosperous eastern Germany. Despite its geopolitical challenges, she would like also to have Russian gas which is relatively cheap.

The decision to exclude the far right from any coalition gives the Greens big bargaining power. The Greens are anti coal.
