The German ruling class supported Hitler. They saw him as a person who controlled the streets....a very credible protection against the murderous, awful Bolsheviks. Over time that perspective infected the masses.

Damn good question. Even more, voices that criticize Trump were marginalized for years, if they were too 'strident' and 'divisive.' By people who knew better.
