The Republicans had a strong isolationist contingent in those days. FDR was appeasing them and anti-war folks in his own party. Notice the efforts to bolster weapons production and military spending began in the late '30s. FDR and many others knew US involvement was inevitable, merely a matter of "when" not "if". It took Pearl Harbor to jar reality into the minds of the isolationist, not the president.
And today, those Republicans would be despised as "RINOs". Todays GOP recoils at the mere mention LBJ era legislation and policies.
It's because they hate what it represents and believe the country was a better place prior.
Face it. It's the damned truth.
