Do you try to put out a swamp fire or let it burn itself out?

They've tried both.

This is the same fire that was burning last year.

The problem is that peat moss goes fairly deep under water---and creates its own oxygen. So, how do you extinguish a fire that's already submerged and making it's own oxygen?

Last year they tried draining part of the swamp. The idea being to give it more oxygen so it would burn itself out faster. But the resultant smoke was so horrendous that people with respiratory ailments started filling up emergency rooms. Scratch that.

The smell is pretty pungent, I wouldn't recommend it for an aromatherapy fragrance. Luckily the wind has shifted again and we're supposed to get some storms tonight. That usually helps clear the air for a while.

what we used to do when the fields caught fire ( fields were peat moss)was dig a trench around the fire so as to contain it and let it burn out. We generally grew onions so they would essentially boil from the heat and moisture. A definite odor not for the faint of heart.

You should have come out to Coney Island. The "lazy homeless bums" that all "real Americans" work harder than would walk up and down the beach all day in the heat with heavy coolers filled with ice and beer to sell. My hard working middle class ass never had to get off the blanket except to piss.

Don't worry, I never tipped them, why tip someone to lazy to get a "real job?"

Yeah, but this is thousands of acres of swampland. A much larger task.

That swamp is appropriately named. Good luck with your smoke.

Great Dismal Swamp

indeed that is a great name.

When I bought my "gentleman's farm" a few years back I named it "Drowned Lands Farm" as the acreage with the farm was reclaimed swamp land that the Indians had called drowned lands.
