Intellectual Property still respected.

One of the big difference between the West and the rest of the world is the
respect for the property of the mind.

A court ordered Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke to pay the family of Marvin
Gaye 7.4 million dollars for their infringement on Marvin Gaye's music; specifically the song "Got To Give It UP'.

The idea that property is more than physical is a strong western one and the
commitment to such an idea is reinforced by financial penalties.

A great deal depends upon who you are. I had a 900 page training manual online specifically noted that it was for individuals private use. Bumped into a professor from a major technical institute who said that it was great and that he used it in his classes. It was marked Copyright on every page but the institute never paid me a cent and I could not afford a lawyer.

Sorry to hear about that.

But I thought that with the proliferation of lawyers and internet lawyers that there would be someone/entity which would be willing to pursue such a case
without a burdensome initial charge.

"Until recently, the purpose of intellectual property law was to give as little
protection as possible in order to encourage innovation."

Something about complaints from popular Brit authors and unauthorized Yankee piracy, Charles Dickens comes to mind as one.
