I remember reading about Leopold and Loeb on the other side of the border.

I remember the case and it made the world news last week that one of the killers was back in prison.

As to what we would do here locally just a couple of years ago an 8 year old ambushed his dad and also killed his dads roommate. Ended up with probation.

We had a 13 year old in a juvenille prison rape and murder a 60 year old woman.

So is evil inherent within a person, or is it learned? Not that it justifies the conduct, but one has to wonder whether the 13yo was sexually and/or physically abused.

I have been involved in appointed juvenile cases where children involved - preschool aged children - were reported to be involved in sexually acting out with other children in the facility. That juvenile court is a sad, sad place. I don't think I could handle being over there for any extended period of time, but thank God there are people willing to try to give these kids a normal life.

Regards,

D-Ray

Kind of related, in a way, I guess, was that Bethany threatened to kill herself when she was 10-11 after a particularly bad row w/her father. I could NOT see letting that happen, that was one of the things that attracted me to her. I have given a LOT to that girl over the 7-8 years I've been w/her, but you know, she's given me SO much in return...In ways I could never have imagined. I kinda thought we were a bit like Hopson & Arthur, but w/me 'n' my screwiness, sometimes it was hard to tell who was the kid & who was the presumptive adult...But I always treated her pretty much as an equal, I tried hard to never talk down to her, or berate her, 'cause I had an idea how hard she had it w/her REAL parents. She told me not long ago I'd been like a daddy to her, I kinda growled 'n' snarled at her, "Aww, go on, ya l'il so 'n' so..", but inside it damn near broke me up. Sorry to go on about my l'il "girlfriend" & all, but I love her like she was my kid. I guess my point, in a roundabout way, is that I saw that this kid had a bad home life, & coulda gone VERY bad in a big way, but I jumped into the breach & tried to help her as much as I could. Too bad some of these other kids didn't have people who were willing to take a chance on 'em like I was w/Bethany.

Well then, I will amend my previous statement to "Thank God there are people like Sandy willing to give these kids a chance."

My wife talks about bringing some foster kids in now that we are empty nesters. I gotta admit that she has a much more generous spirit than the guy she married. That generosity of spirit is probably why she was willing to marry him in the first place.

D-Ray

The problem with news blackouts is they're like a vacuum. According to one national newspaper Venebles (now 27) is back in prison for getting involved with child porn on the internet. True? Who knows but I doubt this will go away this close to a general election. By foul means or fair, the opposition is almost bound to use it as to criticize of the criminal justice system in general.

I remember that too.

I'm not sure how to handle it, and for sure growing up in prison doesn't help lend those kids stability.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
