The Suez Is In Need of an Upgrade

Recent events with a jumbo sized container ship lodging itself sideways and blocking the canal makes me wonder why in 100 years of existence no one thought to dig a twin canal?

Beats me. Maybe because that dump has been at war for much of those 100 years?

One canal has huge value, compared to no canal. A second canal has only incremental value, compared to one canal. The cost/benefit ratio is totally different. Until the one canal gets blocked. But that's only a hypothetical case....

I believe that a ship in the canal is under the control of tug boats.

The application of nuclear icebreakers and the effects of climate change will eventually make the Arctic route to Europe from the East a practical one, thus easing the traffic through Suez.
