Yeah, SS is 'solvent' on paper. Check out how much of it has been spent, it's another moveon 'truth'.

That includes the trillions in paper ious (aka federal bonds) held in a three ring binder in a safe in WV.

Which the Feds spent.

Pete, How about some numbers from that bastion of liberalism, the Tax Foundation. Their numbers seem to rebut your conclusion that taxes for the rich increased under Bush. The higher incomes in some instances paid a lower rate, because the capital gains are taxed at a lower rate than earned income. (Yeah, earned income is taxed t a higher rate than unearned income.)

Quote:
The 2003 tax cut was the second in three years, and although tax rates are lower, the federal income tax still remains highly progressive. The average tax rate in 2007 ranges from around 3 percent of income for the bottom half of tax returns to 22.45 percent for the top 1 percent. Since 2001, the average tax rate has fallen from 4.09 percent to 2.99 percent for the bottom 50 percent, and it has fallen from 28.20 percent to 21.46 percent for the top 0.1 percent and 27.5 percent to 22.45 percent for the top 1 percent. This large drop-off for the very top is largely due to the reduction in capital gains and dividends taxes, as well as the drop in ordinary tax rates.
http://www.taxfoundation.org/news/show/250.html

The numbers are more skewed, because it doesn't appear to take into account that big tax break that those with incomes over $108,000 receive when they no longer pay Social Security contributions, which, of course are also not collected on capital gains.

EDIT: Pete, I just noticed that your chart showed the percent of taxes paid by each income group. That kind of growth under Bush is entirely understandable, insofar as the gap between the higher incomes and the lower incomes increased under Bush, while the middle class shrunk. The more of the wealth the top cats receive, the more tax revenue will be collected from that income.

Regards,

D-Ray
