Personally, I think he meant "actual" rape and not rape that has been falsely alleged. "Legitimate" was just a poor choice of words.
However, the assertion that the female body somehow knows the insemination was forced and throws up a stop sign for the sperm is what I find ridiculous. I am certain the countless women who have "actually" been raped and come up pregnant over the millenia would be quick to expound upon that point.

Well the use of "legitimate" implies non-legitimacy to other rapes i.e. blaming the victim.....

Actually, his use of "legitimate rape" was intended to be "forcible rape," a word coined by the authors of a proposal to change the Hyde Amendment which already prohibits Federal funds for abortion (and supported by over 200 of the House GOP). They wanted to draw a distinction between "forcible rape" (a term that heretofore had no legal meaning) and statutory rape or drug-induced rape. The proposal was ultimately dropped once the GOP understand how f*cking ridiculous they looked.
That said, this clown doesn't even support an exemption for forcible rape, if one takes him at his word.

I just hope that he stays in the race. He might get 20% of the women's vote.

Including Paul Ryan. He was a co-sponsor of the original bill.

And now the Neanderthal knuckleheads want to retain a plank in the party platform to outlaw all abortions without exceptions for rape, mother's health, etc. Isn't this a logical disconnect with their throwing Todd Akin under the bus for saying the same thing? You can't have it both ways, fellas.

And they wonder why they're far behind with woman voters?

They've turned into a crazed mob.
The first time I really noticed it was back when I voted Republican and the Terri Schiavo law passed. Seeing those guys lined up for a photo op like they did something good just made me sick. The party of small government turned into the party of giant micromanagement. They completely abandoned their purported principle of governance -- letting states and their citizens deal with situations themselves.

+1.
IMO, that was the most disgusting display of governmental grandstanding, ever. What? Congress gets to decide the validity of that womans life status, against the conclusions of trained medical professionals and the womans legal guardian?
They used her as a tool. Plain and simple. Just as they do so many others.

And the sheer beauty of it all is that as of yesterday he is still in essentially a dead heat with McCaskill.
