I remember back when I was a construction inspector on the DC mall tunnel back in 1972 during a summer as an engineering student. There was a Gradall (excavator with a telescopic boom) operator who would tilt the bucket as shown in the picture below and write his name (Bill) in cursive in the dirt.

Good equipment operators have a feel for where the bucket is. It is like an extension of their arms.
My old boss dug out aluminum irrigation pipe with a backhoe. It was buried about a foot underground and he always managed to scrape the dirt off without puncturing the line.
