Heading up to the High Sierra for some fishin' and a little prospectin' after stopping in Los Gatos for my sis in laws birthday. I'll be avoiding King's Canyon, 19 degrees at night there...I sure hope it warms up by the weekend .
At least we won't be sleeping on the ground. Renting one o' these.

I went up to Kings Canyon once on a Fri--this was a weekend vacation during a two-week, accompanied-by-the-Mrs, business trip. Don't recall now just what time of year, but I bet it was about this time. Got a couple feet of snow overnight Fri and we were stuck in the lodge up there. Had a good time but i was sweating getting back to town Sun. They finally opened the road Sun afternoon....

When I was a Boy Scout in Missouri, our troop did an annual "Deep Freeze" camp-out the first weekend of February every year. The 4th year I went, we got up in the morning and the Wesson oil would not come out of the bottle.
We broke camp and went home.

As a Girl Scout we went camping every spring. In Minnesota, that often meant camping in snow.
No lodge. No packing it up and going home.

Damn. In such instance, hard-core scouts just take turns putting the oil bottle inside their shirts until it warmed-up enough.
How far below zero was it?

Kings is a great place. Looks like the weather is warming up in the Sierras', we're headed to the southern end up above Lake Isabella on the upper Kern river. So we should be fine.
We drove up the coast on route 1 from San Luis Obisbo to Santa Cruz before heading inland to my brothers place. Tomorrow morning we're off to the big mountains.

When I was a teenager a bunch of us were out drinking in the woods and I passed out drunk and when I woke up the next morning I was freezing my butt off. I later heard on the radio that the overnight low had been 37 degrees. That's about as close as I ever came to cold weather camping.

While we're on the subject I just got a call from my daughter who borrowed my tent for the weekend. Seems she left a cooler inside it and went for a hike and a raccoon chewed his way into it. She said the hole is about the size of a raccoons head. Can that be patched or is the tent a total loss?
