Civil Rights & Protest Music
Hello folks,
Lately I've been listening to Civil Rights and Protest Music and I'm looking for more artists:
I have Pete Seeger, Utah Phillips, Tom Paxton, Phils Ochs, and The Weavers. I got into this after Pete Seeger's death.
Names and suggestions most welcomed.

Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Jefferson Airplane are just a few. Looking to get radicalized Brent?

I suppose that it's cliche' to mention CSN&Y, but "Ohio" and "Chicago" were to me classic protest songs. Neil Young's "Southern Man" probably fits in there as well as Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth." Later stuff by Neil includes "Rockin' in the Free World."
A fairly modern band that includes considerable political content is Rage Against the Machine. They are a bit of a cross between hip hop and rock, but the song "Bulls on Parade" is pretty good protest stuff. One of the lyrics was "Rally 'round the family, with a pocket full of shells." They also cover "Ghost of Tom Joad."
Uncle Tupelo has paid tribute to the folk protest tradition with their "March 16-20, 1992" album. Pay attention to "Coal Miners" and "Atomic Power."
The Bottle Rockets, a group that derived from Uncle Tupelo, has a terrific song "Welfare Music."
You want to go back awhile, how about Ledbelly - 'The Bourgeois Blues'
And did you forget about Woody Guthrie?
Sorry for the overkill, but I love political music. On the other hand, Lee Greenwood makes me want to puke.
Regards,
D-Ray

Tonio K.
well there's a riot in the courthouse, there's a fire in the street
there's a sinner bein' trampled by a thousand pious feet
there's a baby every minute bein' born without a chance
now don't that make you want to jump right up and start to dance?
all's you gotta do is grab your partner by the hair
throw her down and leave her there
And Tonio's musical godfather...Country Joe McDonald
Come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, and don't hesitate
To send your sons off before it's too late.
You can be the first ones in your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

No, I just like and enjoy the music. I appreciate your suggestions but those get regular play here along with Janis Ian. I'm looking for less known stuff.
