The Bottle Rockets, a group that derived from Uncle Tupelo, has a terrific song "Welfare Music."
You want to go back awhile, how about Ledbelly - 'The Bourgeois Blues'
And did you forget about Woody Guthrie?
Sorry for the overkill, but I love political music. On the other hand, Lee Greenwood makes me want to puke.

I have Woody but somehow forgot to mention him. I think I have some Ledbelly in my blues collection. I do like Uncle Tupelo and the bands they've spawned. I'll look for Bottle Rocket ovar at Amazon. BTW, I'm rather fond of Levon Helm's work.

I have some Woody and Odetta, but I'll look for Von Ronk and Paul Robeson. Thanks, BH

I never heard of this one. Thanks, BH

The quality of the work by Uncle Tupelo and its progeny is something we can definitely agree on. I'd give Jay Farrar of Son Volt a slight nod as the best songwriter and singer, but the quality work that Wilco and Jeff Tweedy have put out is quite the treasure as well. Brian Henneman certainly brings some wit to his songwriting for the Bottle Rockets. I'd compare the body of work from the former members of Uncle Tupelo favorably to the body of work from the former members of Buffalo Springfield.

Midnight Oil...although the issues are Australian the content is universal.
Blue Sky Mining, Beds Are Burning ( I am sure you have heard the song but the whole al bum is great) and Earth And Sun And Moon.
as someone already has alluded too
The Nightwatchman
althought you might not like the OWS movement this is a really good album.
My favorite part is when he calls Scott Walker a MF er lol
The Boss's Wrecking Ball and High Hopes (with a killer version of The Ghost Of Tom Joad)
are great protest albums.

I'm a fan of all of them. I'm using Son Volt's Honky Tonk cover as wallpaper on one of my laptops. I missed hearing about Bottle Rocket. Speaking of music, is your son still playing?

They are in the studio putting together a full length CD. They went with a professional studio for this one. Thanks for the interest. Here's their website.

Names and suggestions most welcomed.

From what I've read of your posts, I would think that Ray Stevens or Hank Williams jr. would be more your style.
