Hey Don, I was looking for that thread at AK where you were asking about tube amps. No luck, gotta link?
Nevermind I found it.

Actually the smartest thing is to go to Ebay and search for magnavox tube amp in the consumer electronics search tab. I found a fully plug in play 6BQ5 Single Ended for $125.
it actually works out better that way less time burning yourself with solder. The unmodded amps tend to be less, the fully redone ones are of course more...the ones with wood and painted trannys, etc. There is not any there now but if you watch like a hawk you can bag one that is plug and play....

Any idea what the sensitivity is on the Utah speaks?
BTW I'm in the tube power amp camp as opposed to a tube pre. The benefit of tube amps is that they soft clip when playing at louder volume, a pre amp doesn't come into play in that scenario as far as I know. I may be all wet in that opinion but it makes sense from what I've heard over at AK.

Not to my knowledge, AFAIK all Astro's were SS and early SS as well. I wouldn't bother but that's just me. Those early record changers are in the 2 to 3 gram weight class too but you could drop in a more modern table. The pre amp's in the sixties were also a weak point. ymmv.

If I were you Don, I'd be shaking a leg and heading over to Sheltie Dave's on May 3rd.

I always hear the tube pre and the solid state amp are supposedly great sounding.....but are you saying the reverse is true> tube amp with ss pre?

The later Fisher consoles came mixed with tube front ends and sand-state power amps, the Maggies were one or the other, if Astrosonic all-sand state AFAIK.
