What I find fascinating is the fairly straight line that runs from the eastern border of N. Dakota down to Laredo. Wide settlement to the right, thins out radically to the left, a bunch of cities right on the line.

Did you note the data I mentioned above, that Indiana had and has a higher unemployment rate than Ohio?
State lines are interesting things, and they do hive various social impacts (different laws being just one of them). But without understanding just what the algorithms were for placing dots I think we have to be cautions in over-interpreting these maps. 'Artifacts' are quite possible.
