I think ol' Clarence knew once he was seated on the bench he was pretty much untouchable. If any controversies arise, just clam up and ride them out.

He knew he could get away with it so he did it.
As a lowly paper pusher at the county level, I had to sign those disclosure statements every year before I retired. Maybe not exactly the same one Thomas did but from my experience, the language on those forms is not ambiguous. You know exactly what kind of things are supposed to be reported. He knew he should have reported all that stuff.

But he says "somebody" told him he didn't have to. Isn't that good enough?
(seriously sarcastic)

When narcissistic people like Trump and Clarence Thomas reach the pinnacle of their success, a sense of entitlement and rules do not apply to me takes over. Any act of contrition is considered by them as a sign of weakness.

Judicial record undermines Clarence Thomas defence in luxury gifts scandal
Republican mega-donor Harlan Crow was linked to a conservative group that had court business while Thomas was on the bench

Was there ever any doubt? Whell's World.

What Democrats find distasteful/unethical/illegal about Thomas' conduct is exactly what Republicans love so much - his willingness to subvert justice to their ends.

SAN FRANCISCO (The Borowitz Report)—His net worth plummeting after the explosion of SpaceX’s Starship, Elon Musk has fallen below Clarence Thomas on the list of the world’s richest people.

Musk now finds himself lumped in with others who are less wealthy than Thomas, including Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffett, and the Sultan of Brunei.

Speaking to reporters, Musk was “livid” at being surpassed by Thomas, who, he complained, has done “almost nothing” to earn his fortune.

“If Clarence wants eight billion dollars, all he has to do is climb aboard some dude’s yacht,” Musk said. “I have to persuade a billion idiots to buy a blue check mark.”
