I always felt Carter was under rated as a president.
One may not agree with every policy he put forth, but it can't be denied that he is a man who lives his life based on his strong convictions.
The same cannot be said about too many other politicians.

"Thank you President Carter for all that you have done to help people in need."

See! That's the problem with people like you and the peanut man. You supposed to help those who DON'T need it!

Geez!

Regards,
Dave

I was never a big fan of Carter as president (I was a huge Reagan fan), but I we always say he was one of the most honest and decent men to hold that office.

Jimmy Carter lacked presidential presence....tha aura and personality of leadership.

As a result it was easy to stick him with the "weak" adjective.

And on the flip side President Obama gets blamed for having a "Cult of Personality". When did the power of the pulpit change?

For me it was seeing President Clinton plaing sax on Saturday Night Live. I thought really? This is what our political discussion has devolved to? So I voted for Ross Perot.

The game is subtle and the people pulling the puppet strings have patience. They can because they are safe no matter what happens.

Not exactly the flip side. What they are refering to is mass appeal in a pop sense....that is appeal without gravitas.

And yet he was a trained, nuclear, submariner under Admiral Rickover. (Sum? He craps bigger than Reagan in the toughness department.)

Old Saint Ronnie was just able to naively delude himself -- or was not intelligent enough to grasp the gravitas of the world around him -- as Communism eventually imploded and he was, retroactively, lauded with credit.

When foolish faith works out in someones' favor despite themselves, it is unusual for them to realize how fortunate they were... That's Ronnie.

Carter? He had a very clear view of the limitations of his office and our military during the post-Vietnam 1970s as he was left holding the hangover bag. It's hard to have an aura of leadership digging out from Nixon, when the presidency was as resected as a floor mat.

The Iranian Hostage crisis did Carter in....I think that and the failure of his rescue mission made it impossible for him to get re-elected, as well the primary challenge from Ted Kennedy. Plus Carter was sort of negative in tone...remember the malaise speech? Reagan came off as much more natural and likeable, and his convention was so much better than the Democrats' that year. I watched all of it on network tv when the coverage was wall to wall. I really think people discount the likeability factor in our elections.

Now who was better for our nation is really open for discussion. Supply side economics and Reagan's small government mantra came out of his presidency, and here we are with the sequester. Carter did place moral principles on his foreign policy...remember the boycott of the Moscow games ? Most presidents have not even come close to him on that point.
