I would suspect that much of the pristine behavior was motivated by fear. There were a number of people observing the Civil Rights marches looking for any excuse to mow some people down - and some who did without any excuse.
Another perspective on the image of the OWS protesters:

What sign?
I wasn't sure which dirty old man would bite first.
If the movement needed more young males to participate, that would be a pretty good recruitment photo. If you want to get an image of the protesters caught in your mind, you could do worse.

I'm now considering protesting.

That should deflate things
King was very firm about being decent. I have a hard time camparing our current batch of intrepid cultural warriors to them....

I guess it is real easy to get sanctimonious about people's hygene when you are not among the homeless.

MLK was/is a national hero. His activism occurred over 40 years ago - at a time when people still wore coats and ties to ballgames.
There is no question that public expression and behavior have coarsened in many ways since then (although we are much less likely to see racial epithets uttered in public). We are not too far removed from a time when "cross-fire" was specialty programming rather than the norm. Neither the Tea Party nor OWS were intended to be lessons in genteel conduct. They would not have been effective if they were.
Nevertheless, nothing about the distinction between the civil right marches and OWS transforms OWS into anything other than non-violent protest.

D-Ray

The OWS are homeless?
I've gotta say, if you want to win people to your cause the old saying comes to mind.
I thought the OP was interesting. It appears the US playing world cop has made a huge difference.

No doubt the publication iI cite here is an established source of progressive ideas, but neutrality aside, this is an interesting article on the common experience of the homeless and the OWS protesters.
In other instances, the OWS activists have found that the issues of homelessness have become intermingled with the protest movement.

D-Ray
