Ford's been doing well for a long time now.
There's intangibles too, heavy manufacturing is a national security issue.

Ford almost went down in 2006. The only advantage that they had was that they sold everything they owned and borrowed a TON of money back in 2006. When GM went to do it, there was no one to borrow money from.
If GM would have gone down, Ford would have gone down too. Definitely.

Yes GM gained market share in the US. Last told though the bailout was still going to cost taxpayers 14 bil. That's a loss, not just a currently unpaid loan, according to the White House in Dec last year. Depends on the stock price.
If GM is selling cars they built in China with Chinese labor and Chinese parts, the big money still comes home to Detroit. Foriegn automakers have been doing that successfully here for many years.
Comparing wages is not apples to apples.

Thanks, Pete. One of the points (Bolded) you present here is exactly what I was trying to point out. And, I understand what your saying about the loss, but in time we should get all of our money back. (Although, I thought at one point that GM was trying to claim that we had? Or, was that Chrysler?).
And, correct. Not apples to apples. There are differences in cost of living, that makes up some of that gap. Productivity is another factor. However, I got the impression from Rex, he was suggesting direct competition on a wage basis. And that just isn't going to happen. It isn't possible, no matter what we do on this end. Reducing American wages that far would mean deflating the US economy at a disasterous rate. Aint-gonna-happen.

Right. He would have just shut everything down and called it a day. And the wingnuts would have applauded his boldness, then bitched endlessly about the unemployment costs.................

Detroit suuuure needs the money. Too bad it'll all go to corporate fat cats.
And isn't it amazing, when it comes to the Shrub, we all agree how great he was.

Cheers! Time to buy another awesome American car. A GM product? Maybe something newer, like a 98 lol. A Regency 98!
