Another conventional wisdom bites the dust ...

... which states that Republicans care more about the deficit than Democrats (and that the economic stimulus of tax cuts reduces deficits).

Oh, now Finn. You know it's not PC to point out that Republicans waste money too. Or that when they do cut taxes, (And they rarely ever do.), they only lower them for people have have no need of it.

I actually had a wingnut tell me the other day,

"Well, Governor Gilmore eliminated the car tax."

"He did? Then what was that $700 I sent to the city last month?"

"Well, he cut it in half."

"No he didn't. It's still four percent. Always has been."

"Well, I know I was only paying half for a while there."

"You were paying half-----every six months. Before that, and now, you pay the full payment once a year. And I'll tell you what else; Remember when the minimum payment was $11? It's $58 now."

Blank stare and a shrug.

Certainly no surprise there. One of the biggest shocks of the election campaign was that the Republicans were still painting themselves as being the fiscally responsible party, after totally trashing the US economy. And still that stupid game continues.

A Health Care plan of some kind is certainly a lesser risk to the the well being of the US economy than irreversible debts and deficits.

BigErik, the politics in this country have gotten completely bizarre. It is actually damaging to a politician if you brand him as an "intellectual". You heard me right. If you describe a politician as a really smart guy/girl the right wingers will use it against him/her. This explains the popularity of people like Palin. She projects the image of a ditzy, ignorant schmuck and they love her for it.

Ever seen the movie "Being There"?

If you care for America at all, start praying for it now.

I saw that coming a while back, which is why I packed up and left the country. It was interesting being an outsider living in the US from the mid 90's to the mid 00's. Watching this glorious country destroy itself through greed and mindless, endless wars. Very sad.

Not that far, actually. America is addicted to debt and war. Whats the debt now? 360% of gdp? That is unsustainable!

But the scary part is that no effort is being made in the US to turn that around. While the rest of the G20 at the recent get together, was talking about spending cuts and caps to deficits, Obama was just pushing for more debt.

America is slowly turning into Great Britain in 1945.

I somewhat agree with you

And we well may have already started into decline. But simple momentum assures us that we'll be a major force for some years.

Perhaps though the British disease will become known as the American disease

The slow, inevitable unravelling of an expensive and unsustainable global empire?
If this is the case, I welcome it. We have better things to spend our money on than trying to force the rest of the world to fit our mold, IMHO.
